History of the building

Oasis Apartment is above New Elvet, which was originally the main street in Durham. Elvet derives from the Saxon Aelfet-Ee, which translates as Swan Island.
The adjacent buildings date from the 17th century, and the Apartment is within what was a trio of private mansions until the early 19th century, one of which belonged to the grandfather of Anthony Eden, past Prime Minister of Great Britain.
After that time the mansions were converted to a coaching inn, with a wheelwright's shop and yard at the rear.
